Holidays in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote

Lanzarote is the third most popular and visited Canary Island.  The seven strong island group that is owned by Spain but located off the coast of West Africa.  Which welcomes well over a million foreign tourists every year – the majority flying in from the UK, Eire and Germany.

Of the three main holiday resorts on the island Playa Blanca, the newest, is the fastest growing.  Thanks to it’s winning combination of great beaches, excellent accommodation and wonderful microclimate.  Which blesses this part of the island with the best weather Lanzarote has to offer – especially during the winter months.

Indeed until as recently as the 1990´s Playa Blanca was a quiet and quaint little fishing village.  Whilst other resorts to the north such as Puerto del Carmen were already well developed.  But the potential of the area was always obvious to property developers and hotel chains as Playa Blanca enjoys a fairly well sheltered position on the island’s south east coast and boasts wonderful beaches – such as the coves and bays of Papagayo.

Historically the village had also long been the gateway to the neighbouring island of Fuerteventura too – with regular ferry services crossing the Bocaina Straits.  Strict planning laws on the island were relaxed in the 1990’s allowing development of Playa Blanca and today the resort is the second most popular holiday destination on the island.

There´s an excellent choice of hotels in Playa Blanca for tourists to select from.  The majority of these enjoy four-star status and are located on the main seafront promenade, which stretches from one end of the resort to the other.  Such as the Hesperia Playa Dorada and the Timanfaya Palace.  Both of which offer rooms from as little as €70 per night.

Greater luxury is also available at the five star Gran Melia Volcan – which is situated right next to the stylish Rubicon Marina development towards the west of the resort centre.  Which is a great place to enjoy an atmospheric meal out against the backdrop of expensive yachts and upmarket shops.

Many tourists eschew hotels and book their own villas in Playa Blanca direct online.  With hundreds of privately owned properties available for rent across the resort.  Expect to pay upwards of €350 per week for a standard villa with pool, depending of course in the time of year.

Playa Blanca is also handily located for touring the islands number one tourist attraction of the Timanfaya National Park.  Which is just a ten-minute drive away.  Car hire in Lanzarote is very cheap and there are plenty of rental offices in Playa Blanca for visitors to chose from.
